We farm a total of 16 acres in Santa Clara County, with a variety of terroir, trellis and micro-climate. The difference in ripening time between the San Martin estate and our vineyards in Gilroy is significant, and all of the soils are different, from flat Pleasanton loam in the estate to 9 percent grade Keefers at Soli Deo Gloria necessitating specific cultivation and irrigation practices.
Our modest estate's East block, guarded here by our cat "Princess" was our first vineyard, planted in 2008 with Cabernet, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
We planted additional estate vines in our West block in 2010 and have made commercial wines from them since 2012.
We manage 7 vineyards in the Santa Clara Valley for Bordeaux and Rhone varietals; Colombard, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Sirah
Our strategy of sharecropping works well for the landowner, who's vineyard is maintained at no risk or cost to them beyond the fruit, and who receives wine in return. Other vineyards have been managed on a time and materials basis for those who want to own the fruit.
If you have a vineyard in Southern Santa Clara County that you would like to have us manage, please contact us. Sheldon@lightheartcellars.com
We also buy from family vineyards in San Martin; Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet and Carneros (Napa); Pinot and Chardonnay.
