Harvested from abandoned vines, our 2012 Sangiovese has intense flavors that hint at its heritage in the hills of Tuscany. Small berries at moderate sugar gave a lot of flavor to this "blood of Jupiter", named for the reddish color. Also present in our 2012 "Fascino" blend the Sangiovese grape is known for flavors of tea and cherries.
Our 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc blend won awards, and we have high expectations for the 2012. Making it's debut in November, we will pull the remaining '11 back into the library and let the '12 have the spotlight.
Vineyard and Cellar News:
Harvest is over, except for some late Merlot we are letting ripen for an experiemental Sweet Red, We started on 9/6 and had 14 days of picking across 7 vineyards, bringing in something over 30 tons all told. It was a challenging year in three vineyards with water, and good quality fruit across the board at slightly lower yields that typical. Our last pick was Colombard and we only got 3 bins instead of the usual 4-5. We are still fermenting the last of the Mourvedre and Petite Sirah, and barreling down the pressings.
We will be getting back into the vineyards, ripping to reduce compaction and later tilling to reduce the weed loads. Irrigation, trellis and net maintenance will keep Alex and Chris busy till pruning starts in February.
