With the drought continuing in it's fourth year, we are continuing to manage for low water, keeping the canopy shorter than usual and tilling in the cover crop to reduce evapotranspiration losses. We will be holding off on watering to condition the vines. Now that our construction project is wrapping up, it is time to get back out into the vineyards and do the seasonal tractor work. Sheldon put in 6 hours Sunday morning tilling the 8 acre Athena's vineyard and is getting the 5 acre Chirala vineyard done before commuting hours. Its a balance of enough light to see the vines, and fit a 4 ft tractor down a 6' row, while the wind is calm. We will be spraying for mildew starting Thursday and continuing thought August on 2 week intervals.
Joan and Jane continued racking and topping, and we have planned a bottling session for Chirala Estates to get their 2014 Whites and 2012 reds set for retail. We will be bottling our 2014 "Sweetheart" late harvest Merlot in both 750 ml and 375 ml bottles, and have to design a new label for the smaller bottles. Look for it to contain artwork from local "heart artist" Debbie Arambula.
Our Pavillion is nearing completion, the structure is up, ready for shingles and wiriing. Expanded from our old patio cover it's airy, longer and gives a great showcase for our wider bar. To staff our additional weekends, we've hired Patty Lev and Ron White to help out, and are still looking for additional part time tasting staff to cover events and some weekend hours.
In keeping with the requests to moderate water use, we decided to let our lawn go dormant, We'll use minimal water for our trees and perennial landscaping and try to cut our water use from the well in other areas as well. Keep us in mind for your smaller private events and celebrations, our contacts include private chef and photographers.
